Guest Writer Spot

I’m bring back my Guest Writer Spot for anyone who’d like to share their writing. If youโ€™d like to be included in this slot, please get in touch: estherchilton@gmail.com. Poems can be up to 60 lines and prose 2000 words. If youโ€™d like to add a short bio and photo, then great. All I ask is that thereโ€™s nothing offensive.

My first guest is Murray Clarke, who has made us chuckle recently with his funny newspaper stories. Today he’s sharing a lovely story:

The Cafรฉ Lady

By

Murray Clarke

I pretend to peruse the menu. A young blonde girl appears from the corner of the kitchen โ€“ a cute white cap covering her blonde hair, and an apron with red love hearts tied around her waist.

โ€œI am a Cafรฉ Lady,โ€ she announces, cheerfully.

โ€œWhat is your name, Cafรฉ Lady?โ€ I ask.

โ€œCinderella,โ€ she replies, smiling. What beautiful blue eyes she has!

โ€œThatโ€™s a lovely name.โ€

โ€œNo! I am Lucy!โ€ she says, suddenly changing her mind. โ€œWould you like a drink? Tea or coffee?โ€

I scratch my head, thoughtfully.

Finally, I say, โ€œTea, please, Lucy.โ€

โ€œOr weโ€™ve got coffee with sugar?โ€ she suggests. โ€œOr black tea, mint tea? Or turkey tea?โ€

I grin. โ€œNormal tea will be fine, Lucy. With milk, please. Thank you.โ€

โ€œNo problem. Wait there.โ€

I make a show of checking my watch. โ€œDonโ€™t be too long โ€“ I have a train to catch in half an hour!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ she assures me. โ€œIโ€™ll be back.โ€ And she gives me a little wave.

The waitress turns to go. โ€œDo you want anything while youโ€™re waiting? A bread roll and butter?โ€ Where on earth had she heard that? This is a cafรฉ โ€“ not a posh restaurant! I shake my head in amusement.

A minute later, Lucy returns with a tiny plastic blue cup and saucer.

I feign disappointment. โ€œHavenโ€™t you got a tea cup a little bit bigger?โ€ I ask, politely. โ€œA mug, perhaps?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve not got mugs. Sorry.โ€ And then, as if remembering where we are, she adds: โ€œWould you like something to eat? Burgers, pizzas, chips with red sauce, hot dogs, broccoli, fish without heads, ice cream . . .?โ€ She takes a deep breath before continuing . . . โ€œChicken with legs, carrots, yellow lemons, burnt toast, strawberries, spaghetti, beans with red sauce, cupcakes . . .?โ€

 I interrupt Lucy in mid-sentence: โ€œWow! Spoilt for choice!โ€ I laugh. โ€œErr, Iโ€™d LOVE a pizza!โ€

โ€œWhat kind do you like?โ€

โ€œErr, have you got Pepperoni?โ€ I challenge her. She looks puzzled.

โ€œQuattro Stagioni, maybe?โ€ She screws up her little nose.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what that is,โ€ Lucy replies, bewildered.

Suddenly, as if seized with divine inspiration, I say, โ€œDo you know what Iโ€™d really, really fancy, Lucy? A pizza with tomatoes and cheese!โ€

Her small face lights up.

โ€œIโ€™ve had one of them โ€“ itโ€™s called a Margaret!โ€

โ€œYou mean a Margherita!โ€ I suggest.

โ€œYes โ€“ a Margaret,โ€ she confirms. โ€œWould you like a hot dog โ€“ with a sausage?โ€

โ€œMustard and onions?โ€ I reply, hopefully.

โ€œWeโ€™ve not got onions. Howโ€™s about red sauce?โ€

I pull a long face. โ€œJust a hot dog, please โ€“ with a sausage and mustard.โ€

โ€œNo problem. Wait there.โ€ The waitress turns to go.

โ€œWill you be long?โ€ I ask again. โ€œI donโ€™t want to miss my train.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it!โ€ she smiles sweetly.

I slowly sip my tea, making outrageous slurping noises. Lucy laughs hysterically and goes to fetch my food.

Soon she returns, balancing a pizza and a hot dog on a yellow plastic plate.

โ€œThere you go!โ€ she says with a smile.

โ€œOh, very yummy!โ€ I say, licking my lips. โ€œThank you. You are a very nice Cafรฉ Lady.โ€

โ€œAnd you are a very old man!โ€ Lucy giggles.

โ€œWHAT!!!โ€ I cry, in mock horror. โ€œHow can you say that? And you are a very cheeky young lady!โ€ I tease, tickling her mercilessly in the ribs. She squeals in delight. โ€œRemind me, Lucy, how old you are.โ€

โ€œI am three and three-quarters,โ€™ she announces proudly. โ€œBut my Mummy says I will be four next birthday.โ€

I scoop my adorable little granddaughter up into my arms and give her a great big hug.

โ€œGosh! Look at the time! Grandpaโ€™s missed his train! Fancy sharing one of your deeelicious cupcakes with me? After that, we can get you into your witchโ€™s costume โ€“ ready for tonightโ€™s Halloween party.

โ€œWhat do you say. . . Cafe Lady?โ€
