Editing Service: FAQs

Editing, Proofreading and Advice Service: FAQS

Q. What is a developmental edit?

A. A developmental edit looks at the overall structure and content of your book. It gives advice on the changes you can make to improve it.

During a developmental edit, corrections to your spelling and grammar aren’t made, neither are changes to the actual content. A developmental edit focuses on giving you feedback so you can make the changes.

Q. What is a full edit?

A. A full edit will look at the structure of your book as well as the content and make the changes. New content may be suggested. Paragraph and sentence structure is covered, as well as tone, pace, readability, characterisation, description, dialogue, any plot holes, spelling, grammar and typos.

Q. What is a proofread?

Proofreading focuses on your spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos and consistency only; it doesn’t cover the structure and overall content of your book.

When you’re working so hard on your book, and you’re so close to it, it’s very easy to overlook the simple things. A proofread will allow a fresh pair of eyes to give your book a final read-through.

Q. Is everything done by email?

A. Email is the most cost-effective option, but you can send your manuscript by post if you prefer. I also offer Skype and telephone consultations should you wish them.

Q. How long will you have my work?

A. For a full-length book I’ll have it back to you within four weeks.  A shorter time period can be arranged at an additional cost.

Short stories, articles, synopsises and blurbs will be returned to you within a week.

Q. Will you make changes on my manuscript?

A. The way I work is to make general comments at the beginning of your work and then any specific comments and suggested changes on the script itself, in red, so you can see them clearly. If you would prefer me to use track changes, please let me know when submitting your manuscript to me.

Q. How much will it cost?

A. As stated above, my fees are based on each individual’s needs. A quote for the project will be provided, in writing, after my assessment of your manuscript sample and a discussion between us as to the level of service required.
