My guest this week is Paula Charlton. She doesn’t usually write poetry, but was inspired to write this after a recent problem with her heating. ‘I was so fed up,’ she says, ‘but then I began to put things into perspective. This is what came out.’
The Boiler’s Blown
By
Paula Charlton
Heating cuts out
“Bother,” I shout.
I shiver and shake
and cups of tea make
scarves, hats and thick scarves too
but in reality I haven’t a clue
I have some wealth
and I have health
not like the starving
or those dying
I am not a victim
of an evil tyrant acting on a whim
I do not face
hurt or disgrace
when I make a mistake
or a god forsake
I do not live in fear
of constantly losing all I hold so dear
my heating will be fixed; tomorrow was the plumber’s date
plights of others the world over will not be so fortunate
Paula Charlton loves storytelling and has written lots of short stories. She especially likes making magical tales up for her grandchildren. Working as an accountant for most of her life hasn’t given her much fodder for stories. That’s where her imagination comes in.
If you’d like to be included in my guest writer slot, please get in touch: estherchilton@gmail.com. Poems can be up to 60 lines and prose 2000 words. If you’d like to add a short bio and photo, then great.
