Desk Buddies – Henry Hoover

In my latest series, I’m taking you on a tour of my desk buddies, who watch over me as I work. This week, it’s the turn of Henry Hoover. These quirky vacuums came out in 1979, released by Numatic home appliances. They soon became one of our best-loved domestic appliances and are now seen as something of a design classic. A friend of my partner’s mother knitted one for her and I told her how cute I thought it was. She had one specially made for me for my birthday. So Henry is on one of my desk shelves, keeping my chargers in check.

Alex Gust sent in a photo of his amazing desk buddies. I’d love to add these to my collection!

If you have any special writing buddies, and would like them featured here, send a photo and a few words to estherchilton@gmail.com.

  2. Ahhh, thanks, I now understand why English and American call them Hoover. 😊. I have asked and never got an answer.
So it is a vacuum cleaner. Or Dammdugare. ( Swedish).

  4. I have a Henry Hoover. However, he is to large for my desk and lives in the hall cupboard from which he emerges from time to time to eat my Labrador’s dog hairs and other assorted fluff Etc! Great to read about your Henry desk buddy Esther

  5. Your buddies are adorable. Right now I’m in need of a desk, LOL. My desk buddy is my husband who sits at the kitchen island with his computer next to me. My other buddy is my credit card holder for ordering the new Story Chat book on Amazon. My other buddy is a coffee cup that says, “Instant Human, just add COFFEE.”

  9. Esther, this is so cute and what a sweet present! Henry Hoovers were a bold bright and innovative design! It’s fun to see your desk buddies – I have a few of mind own including a troll in a hand-knitted dress (my mother’s work) plus my ‘good luck’ pencil toppers of a squirrel and polar bear which have both seen better days. Hope you’ve had a good and safe weekend! xx

  10. HI Esther, I like your knitted Henry Hoover. When my family visited the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, they had an antique knitted aeroplane on display. The British love to knit.
