Desk Buddies – Joan’s Moneybox

In my latest series, I’m taking you on a tour of my desk buddies, who help me in my work. This week’s muse for my writing is a moneybox which belonged to my grandmother. It sits on a shelf to my right and I always feel she’s watching over me.

My grandmother’s name was Joan and her father was wine butler to King George V and she spent some of her childhood at Sandringham. They all thought the world of her and made this moneybox for her there. ‘Sandringham’ has even been engraved on the bottom. As you can see, it’s been attacked by woodworm, but I still love it and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

Hugh W. Roberts sent in his ‘posh’ bear, who sits on his desk. We can see from the name why Hugh calls him ‘posh’. I think he’s rather delightful.

If you have any special writing buddies, and would like them featured here, send a photo and a few words to estherchilton@gmail.com.

  1. I can’t imagine how much that wooden box might be worth, but my piggy bank has always been words, far from the cunning silences and uninhibited poses. For me, the box would represent my computer once trampled until the screen bled inking black because of the damn dog feeling lucky acting like the innocent child remake.

  10. Hi Esther, just reading this post I can tell you would be horrified by the state of my work/writing desk and the chaos of my painting table. And so, I will keep them to myself – giggle.
