Guest Writer Spot

This week’s guest writer is a former student of mine. It’s lovely to read her work again. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Belinda Davidson. Here’s a little bit about her:

My name is Belinda Davidson.

I’m an English teacher living in France away from my family.

I completed a writing course a long time ago with The Writers Bureau and Esther was my tutor. I’ve always followed her blog through sickness and in health (I’m recovering from cancer) and she is a great inspiration.

When I FaceTime my grandaughter she shouts ‘Nana’s in the iPad’ and I suppose to a 3 year old – that’s where I am.

Families live apart these days and without technology contact would be very difficult.

So I wrote this poem for her.

Belinda writes the blog Laplumedebelinda about French life.

Now for her moving poem:

For Grandchildren Everywhere

My Nana’s in the iPad

I love her very much

I see her every week

We speak but never touch

My Nana’s in the iPad

I long to see her so

She lives so very far away

And I’m too young to go

My Nana’s in the iPad

She always send me gifts

I know she wants a cuddle

And her mood it never shifts

My Nana’s in the iPad

Oh come and see me please

I need to smell your Number 5

And shop and climb in trees

My Nana’s in the iPad

I hope I’ll see her soon

I want to sing and dance with her

And be in the same room

My Nana’s in the iPad

I love her very much

I see her every week

We speak but never touch.

Dedicated to my beautiful granddaughter Remy

  1. Such a perfect poem. It is hard when we live so far away from our family. All the best Belinda!

  2. Such a wonderful, moving and heartfelt poem, Belinda. And I love the picture of your granddaugter. I have one of the same age. Well done. Wishing you and your family good luck and good health for the future. From Murray Clarke.

  3. Esther, it is lovely to meet one of your former students here!

Belinda, you have a gift for writing! The repetition of ‘Nana is in the iPad’ works brilliantly, the cascade of these words becoming more emotional with each stanza. Your poem drives home the joy of the connection of the modern world yet its ultimate failure in allowing that in-person togetherness. Hope you and your beautiful granddaughter Remy have a chance to meet up soon! Take care.

    Hi Belinda,

I found your poem both moving and uplifting. The sadness of not being able to cuddle your granddaughter regularly, softened by the fact that you and she talk on videolink and there is so much love there. The reptition of the first stanza at the end makes it even more powerful.

I have no kids or grandkids but some wonderful great nieces. It makes me very happy and emotional when I’m talking to my sister on video and the small ones rush over to say hello without prompting. This made me think how hard it must be for you with such a beautiful granddaughter in another country. Your poem says it all.
