Guest Writer

This week’s guest writer is the delightful Val Fish, whose blog is sexagenarianscribbler. She produces some super responses to my challenges and has a love of limericks. Here are a few limericks from her latest book:

With his sermon about to begin

The priest had to suppress a huge grin

Cos just minutes ago

Out the back with a pro

He’d committed a cardinal sin.

When Henry and Anne of Cleves wed

Things fell short in the marital bed

A sorry affair

For the Flanders Mare

At least she got to keep her head.

Michael Fish was too quick to allay

Fears of a hurricane on its way

Untold damage was done

(Sevenoaks became one)

When the great storm hit later that day.

(I am married to a Michael Fish, not that one!)

Here is a bit about Val and her book of limericks:

I have been writing limericks for as long as I can remember; my efforts have often featured in The Daily Mail.

I enjoy taking part in online challenges, of course Esther’s is one of my favourites!

My local U3A writing group self-publish their work, and when someone suggested I publish my limericks, I took the plunge.

The resulting ‘Sexagenarian from Smithy Fen, and other limericks’ is available on Amazon, or for a signed copy (plus P&P), you can contact me via email: valfish56@gmail.com

If you’d like to be included in my guest writer slot, please get in touch: estherchilton@gmail.com. Poems can be up to 60 lines and prose 2000 words. If you’d like to add a short bio and photo, then great.

  1. Val is not only a brilliant limerick writer but is also a great writer of short stories. I have the good fortune to read a lot of her work while the ink is still wet. A very talented lady,

  3. I looked up Smithy Fen and sexagenarian both! So I got a lesson with my limerick. She is really good. But does she really live in that place they describe as a traveling caravan? Or has that place changed in recent years? Now I’m so curious!

      Thanks Kim.

First, I am definitely a sexagenarian! And, although born and bred in London, I do now live in the Fens. I was after a catchy title for the book, love alliteration. and thought ‘Smithy Fen’ might attract local interest. So of course I then had to write a limerick to go with it.

Just to be clear, I don’t go dallying with different men!

      1. I wasn’t asking that! Lol! I was curious if your lifestyle is nomadic, or do you live in the Fen full time? Is it like its own city, or more like a camp within a city?

We are living a kind of nomadic style in our motor home, so I’m definitely not pointing fingers or anything like that. I feel blessed to be able to live this way, see more of the country, and be out in nature more…it’s fabulous!

  4. Well done, Val. Keep on rhyming!

(I see that the regular Margaret Reid poetry contest is offering a prize for rhyming or traditional form poems this year, which is encouraging. Since rhyme is unfashionable I’ve give up entering poetry contests, but I may have another go at this one.)
