Here’s the next instalment in my building work diary, telling the tale of when I had a loft conversion a few years ago.
If you missed the story so far, here are the earlier days:
Days Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven and Twelve
Days Thirteen, Fourteen and Fifteen
Days Eighteen, Nineteen, Twenty and Twenty-one
Days Twenty-two, Twenty-three and Twenty-four
Days Twenty-five and Twenty-six:
No one turns up. I can’t get hold of Mike to find out what’s next on the agenda. Happy days!
Day Twenty-seven:
A guy called Gary turns up. “I’m yer second fixer,” he says.
But haven’t we already had that done? Or was that a ‘second fit’ and a ‘second fix’ is something else entirely? I’m starting to get a headache.
“I’ll only be here three – four days and then Dyno Des will come and do his bits at some stage,” Gary continues.
Who on earth is Dyno Des and what’s his role in all this?
“Oh, and Ernie the electrican will be here at some stage.”
Who’s next? Pete the plumber?
I am still none the wiser who Dyno Des is and ask, but Gary has turned his radio on.
“You don’t mind a bit of light music, do you?” he shouts over the thump of dance music. “Makes me feel like I’m back in the club.” He shows me a few moves.
I leave him to it and find myself thinking, so this is what youngsters listen to these days? I must have turned in an eighty-year-old overnight.
