Book News – Competition Results

To celebrate the launch of my 3rd collection of short stories, The Storm, I decided to hold a short story competition. The top entry would win a copy of The Siege, my first short story collection. The results are now in. There were some great entries, which made it very difficult to choose a winner. A special mention goes to Lance Greenfield for his entry.

The challenge was to write a story in 50 words, using the following words in it somewhere:

  • MIRROR
  • SALAD
  • GHOST
  • MAGAZINE
  • BEER

The winner is Hugh Roberts with his story:

In a futuristic world, I stared into the quantum mirror, hoping to glimpse a hidden dimension.

Instead, a ghostly figure emerged, holding a holographic magazine. It revealed secrets of interstellar travel just as my beer transformed into liquid stardust.

The salad of knowledge served, I embarked on an extraordinary journey.

Well done, Hugh! A copy of The Siege will be on its way to you very soon.

    What a great little story.

      1. Me too. I never tried it until I attended the Swanwick Writers’ Summer School, for the first time, a few years back. My first attempt was a trial, as the story that I wrote was more than three times the required length and needed some ruthless editing.
I’m more used to it now though, and I just love the challenge.

      2. I think every writer should try flash fiction as it teaches us so many good lessons about the art of writing.

  2. What fantastic news that my little story won your competition, Esther. Thank you so much. I’m thrilled. Only having 50 words to play with was tough, but it does help with getting rid of redundant words.

    Thanks again.
