What To Write Next?

As many of you know, my first writing craft book, Publication Guaranteed (Well, Almost!) is coming out on the 27th June. Thank you to those of you who have already pre-ordered the book.

I have so many ideas for the next book in the series. Would you like to see one about actual publications to write for? I know many of you find it difficult to find markets to send your work to. Perhaps you’d like one about creating characters and how to bring them to life. Or how about perfecting a sense of place and taking the reader right to the scene? Another idea is to build on an article I had published in Writing Magazine on mistakes writers make and how to avoid them. I’d love to know your thoughts.

    These are all great ideas but I think a book on mistakes writers make and how to avoid them would be very good. Good luck on your soon to be released book.

    I think one about finding actual publications is is great one! Especially ones that pay well and do not mess you around. 🙂 I’ve pre-ordered your book, too. 😃 Hope you’re keeping well, Esther. With regards to mistakes writers make, another WB tutor has written at least two books about this. His name is Alex Gazola (hopefully I’ve spelt his name correctly!) he has a blog and books called mistakes writers make. Not that I’m plugging his books, just mentioned it as a help. 🙂 I’ve read the first one, which I found useful.

      Thanks, Sarah. Good to know your thoughts. Really helpful. I may do both – the book about mistakes writers make would cover fiction and I know Alex is a non-fiction writer so I would cover different things to him. But he’s a fab writer 😃 I hope you’re well and thank you so much for pre-ordering the book. It means a lot.

        That sounds like a great idea! I need lots of help with fiction. 🤣 I’m rewriting several short stories I did years ago so once I’m happy with them, I’ll be sending you an email to tell me if they’re any good. 😃 I’m going to keep practicing until I can get it. It’s the showing and not telling I struggle with, mainly because I prefer how the telling reads.
        I did forget to mention that Alex usually covers mistakes that new writers make.
        I’m fine thank you, nothing has changed for me because I’m a key worker. 🙂

    A book about mistakes would be great as I make lots of them. I would also be interested in advice on how you bring characters to life more. Mine need a bit of a kick up the backside to be honest. How to create a setting would be useful too. I want to wait for your paperback version of your new book as this would be easier to refer to going forward. But I really enjoy your blog, Esther. Thank you. 😀

      Yes, this would be very useful. It took me a while, and a lot of struggle to teach myself the publishing process (both traditional and self-publishing, which are totally different).

    Creating characters and mistakes. I have no real idea how to create characters fully. Mine have no depth and I am struggling to learn how to create characters that come alive and aren’t just there like the furniture LOL! Also I am sure I make plenty of mistakes. I stopped writing for 30 years after I received a rejection letter at the age of 17. So it is like trying to relearn all over again and grammar, which used to be my favorite subject has been a nightmare after all these years. I have been writing and blogging for 10 years now and have several starts to books thanks to NANOWRIMO, but never finished anything. I am a pantser so struggling to outline a book for this NANOWRIMO camp session in July. It is not going well.
