You may want to write for a cat magazine but can’t think of an original idea. Looking through the magazine in question, you come across a quirky and interesting article about cats and superstitions relating to them. This gets you thinking about an old saying about cats that you heard recently. With some research, you could build on this and turn it into a fun article about strange and amusing cat sayings over the years.
Alternatively, you may plan to write an article for a magazine which focuses on collecting. Perhaps you collect trinket boxes but you find that the magazine has recently featured an article on this subject. Don’t set the magazine aside as a market. Instead, analyse it for ideas for other articles. A piece on someone who collects old bookmarks may feature a cricket scene. You have a relative who collects cricket memorabilia, including some rare and valuable pieces. This would make a highly interesting article for the magazine.
When you look through a magazine, keep an open mind and let the ideas come.
