Happy New Year! I know lots of you have been back blogging for a while, but I took a little bit of a break over the festive period. I hope you all had a wonderful time with friends and family and that your 2018 is going great so far.
So, it’s back to my new weekly series. Each week, I give you an idea – whether it’s a magazine to write for, a theme for a short story, the opening line of a poem…Here are the first , second and third in the series.
This week, it’s the fourth instalment and letter D‘s turn. And D is for Driving.
Many of us drive a car and I’m sure you know what type of car you like. Perhaps cars are a hobby for you and you’ve restored one. If so, why not write about it for a magazine like Classic Cars? Or maybe the thought of driving and cars is taking you back in time to your first car. You could write a nostalgia piece for a publication like Best of British, or The Guardian’s Family Saturday supplement. Another possibility is if you have a funny story about a car/trip somewhere. A lot of the women’s weeklies have letters pages welcoming this type of anecdote.
Switching from non-fiction to fiction, there are plenty of novels and short stories which feature a car in them – think Christine by Stephen King, Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry and who can forget the flying Ford Anglia in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets? So there’s lots of creative inspiration there.
