The A-Z Of Writing Ideas – A Is For…

Here’s part one of my new writing series. Each week, I’ll be bringing you an idea – whether it’s a magazine to write for, a theme for a short story, the opening line of a poem…

This week, my idea for you is in the form of the letter A, and in this case A is for ANIMALS.

Many of you have animals whether they’re cats, dogs, horses, or chickens. There are lots of animal magazines out there which welcome readers’ letters, articles about pets, information-based pieces about animals etc. Here are some which are worth a look as markets to write for:

Your Cat

Dogs Today

Horse and Rider

Country Smallholding

These are just a few; there are plenty of other animal and pet magazines out there.

For the fiction writers amongst you, why not write about a missing pet and how it reunites a couple who haven’t been getting on for months? Or a new addition to the family could make the difference to a very ill child.

  3. Having just had to deal with the trauma of my 12 year old granddaughters cat being missing for 4 days I’m steering well clear of animals fictional or real! It came back by the way as I told her they mostly always do (I dropped the mostly though).

  4. Just read the comment above which reminded me of when my own cat went missing. I was distraught. Wrote a letter for to her even which I left at the bottom of the garden. Still she didn’t come home. I couldn’t sleep. Father went out looking. Eventually he found her. My cat had gone with us part way to the beach through the valley but stopped at the edge of her “territory”. We returned home a different way. Poor cat was still waiting for me where she had stopped! She was very very loyal. Not sure I deserved it. To my shame I cried and cried the day I got her. I had absolutely wanted a black cat but my mother would never have bought me a black cat (though she wasn’t honest enough to say so) and I got a tabby instead. The only name I could be bothered to give her was Tabby! There. I’ve confessed! My Tabby was a wonderful, amazing, lovely cat.

  5. Thank you Esther. I got Tabby on my sixth birthday. She lived until I went to Uni. Died of cancer. I couldn’t bear to take her to the vet’s (she detested going anywhere by car) so arranged a house visit to take away her pain with her cuddled in my arms. We we were very close.
