   Before you laugh too loudly… some of us actually got some of these items for Christmas! What’s more they were welcome. You need to go back to a world of gas fires and toasting forks, making toast under the grill etc to understand why… As for coffee, the best a lot of people could manage was coffee grounds in a jug… or, far more commonly, instant coffee in a jar. As for the men, they tended to get socks and ties, or items to clean the car.
