Top Tip Of The Week

Sit back and relax!

So, we’re into the second half of January already and how is your writing going? Struggling to get started? Can’t think of a story idea, or characters? Time to sit back, relax and let your mind do the work for you!

Have a pad and pen by your side, then take a few moments to close your eyes. Then clear you mind and body of all its tensions and anxieties. Start with your head and work down your body to your toes, focusing on letting everything go, bit by bit.

Your mind will then take over. Perhaps a scene will appear – a beach/a wood/a house/a street or maybe a person/people will be the focus of your thoughts. Think about that person/people. Are they homeless/rich/upset/happy? Just let the thoughts and images wash over you.

Then slowly open your eyes and write down all you can remember. If you fall asleep – fine! You’ll feel refreshed and (hopefully!) energised. As soon as you awake, write down everything that comes to mind. You don’t have to start work on the scenes and characters straight away. Make yourself a cup of tea or go for a walk. Your mind will continue building on those scenes and characters until you’ve got yourself a story/stories.

To get you started, here’s a scene, which might help you to get those creative juices flowing:

  1. Bought a new notepad a couple of weeks ago and it’s stitches to my hip damn thing has pages of notes already of ideas for stories and blogs. Love a notebook – however the sitting back and relaxing isn’t in my vocab….. But it is ‘try something new month!’ :p
