Markets For Writers

The Oldie

This British print magazine is, as the name suggests, for the older(ish) ones amongst you. The magazine has several filler slots open to writers:

โ€˜Memory Laneโ€™ wants to know what you were doing 40, 50, 60, 70 or 80 years ago and pays ยฃ50 for your memories of yesteryear. One reader wrote about his being employed in the Ministry of Defence 60 years ago and another about arriving in London from India 50 years ago with only ยฃ7 in his pocket to last him two years.

The Oldieโ€™s โ€˜Rantโ€™ slot is a popular one and features a gripe of around 300 words in each issue. Subjects have covered government grievances, our carbon footprint and stores and their powers of deception amongst many others. No mention of payment is made for this slot.

There are also opportunities for longer pieces to be published. They accept unsolicited articles of between 600-1300 words on any subject.

Study of the magazine is recommended first to get a feel for what they’re looking for. They have a particularly good website, with lots of information, including submission guidelines: http://www.theoldie.co.uk

The Oldie prefers to receive submissions by e-mail. Send your โ€˜Memory Laneโ€™ piece to: dairy@theoldie.co.uk and your rants and articles to jeremylewis@theoldie.co.uk. Submissions should be sent as word documents with the particular slot mentioned in the subject line. Within the document, add all your contact details. If you are unable to send via e-mail, you can post your work to:
