Three dots is plenty!
My top tips have included advice on not overdoing exclamation marks as well as dashes. Now it’s the turn of the three dots…
An example of when this is used is where a character’s words trail off in speech e.g.:
“I need some time to think about it…I’ll let you know…” he said, his eyes glazing over.
You only need to signify this with three dots. I’ve seen passages where about twenty dots are used, repeatedly. Not very easy on the eye and of course, it interrupts the flow of the writing.
As this cat demonstrates, this is what can happen to you if you read page after page of text featuring far too many dots 😉
