  3. I’ll never forget when I was at Johannesburg Airport (now O.R. Tambo Airport) a day after an down-run Comrades, a 90km race between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The race leads through the Valley of a Thousand Hills, and the altitude difference between PMB and Durban is around 800m, the down-run towards the coast being harder on the knees than the up, but because the hills there are a lot more ups and downs. Anyway, we’re in Johannesburg and the plane from Durban arrives, the gangway is rolled up to the plane and all the runners, all of them come out and walk down the stairs BACKWARDS.
