  1. My goodness… I certainly blew it by being a wife, I should have been a husband, eh?

  3. I wonder if anyone bothered to write a column to husbands to tell them how to look after their wives!!!!

    1. They could include the “How to Look After Your Wife” instructions in the boys’ Woodshop class textbook. (Fat chance.)

    2. I bet they didn’t. It’s unbelievable how wives were viewed.

  5. This is now considered a totally sexist piece of advice.

  8. It’s so hard to believe that’s what was expected of a wife, to be honest my dad use to say to my mum – with tongue in cheek -‘a good wife would have the dinner on the table as I walked in!’ I think her response was something like ‘you can b….er off!’😃

  9. So strange to see this now. I’ve seen similar advice for women back then. Even in the late 1970s, when I was expecting my daughter, we were given a guide book for what to expect. One piece of advice was when you pack to go to the hospital to give birth, don’t forget to bring your cigarettes if you have them. !!!!!

  11. Honestly, that is so sad and offensive, I can’t bring myself to like your post. But what is weird,I think it is good advice for when you have planned house guests. LOL

  13. I’m so glad I didn’t live back then! I’d definitely have ended up being unmarried I think. Now, where did I put that ribbon for my hair 🙄

  14. My husband would love it if I did all of this for him. His mother didn’t work, so she had time to do those things. I agree that a home should be a place of peace and order.

  20. Wow, this reminds me of some old movies. Times were different and some things just wouldn’t be accepted nowadays. Thanks for the laugh, Esther. My husband and I are a team, so he does just as much as I do around the house. 🥰

You know, it seems so odd just how the original author has nailed my every need so precisely. It’s like I’m suddenly freshly in the dating game all over again. 💍

  23. I have seen this type of arrangement in my grandparents day… it got better in my parents day, but some ‘gents’ still expected more. I’d like to believe that (especially now that both my Hubby and I are retired) that we share equally. Though I do tend to prepare most of the dinners and he does take care of the majority of the bills 😉
