I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Egypt. My mum and dad bought a book about Tutankhamun, whose tomb was found in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. I was only young, but I devoured the book and became fascinated with tombs and mummies. I was fortunate to live near Highclere Castle in Newbury, Berkshire, in the UK, the home of the Lord Carnarvon, who was involved in the discovery. It’s a wonderful castle, and I’ve visited it several times. The best part for me, is a trip to the cellars where they have an Egyptian exhibition.
So, when I heard about Dawn’s new book, I knew it was a must-read.
About the book:
The Ancient Egyptians loved life and celebrated it with joy. Their deepest desire was to live an honorable life and achieve immortality in the afterlife, where they could exist in perfect harmony with the cosmic order and never experience pain, suffering, and hardship again. These original poems by Dawn Pisturino reflect the hopes and dreams of people who were not much different from us. They worked, loved, raised families, worshipped their gods, honored the dead, enjoyed festivals and celebrations, imbibed beer and wine, danced, sang, and played, aspired to better themselves, and appreciated the beauty and wonder of nature. Take a journey back in time to explore the minds and hearts of the Ancient Egyptians.

My review:
I loved being taken to this wonderful, ancient place. Dawn captures the feel of Egypt and its culture in every single one of her poems. Her knowledge of the deities also shows through, none more so than the last part of the book, where she takes us on Ra’s journey into the underworld and takes the time to introduce us to the gods and the relevant terms before absorbing us in the final 12 poems relating to his journey.
All the poems in the book are stunning, so it’s hard to choose a favourite. But, as a cat lover, I have to pick ‘To a Beloved Cat’. It captures the love between an owner and cat perfectly.
I thoroughly recommend Dawn’s book to any lover of poetry and/or ancient Egypt. Five stars from me.
