Music Memories

Okay, so weโ€™ve hadย California Dreaminโ€™ย ,ย Moonlight Shadow,ย The Smurf Song,ย The Clapping Song and Chiquitita. For this week’s trip down music memory lane, it’s Chris De Burgh with Lady in Red:

When I was fourteen, we used to visit my nan most Sundays. She lived a good hour or so away so Mum, Dad and I went to see her in the car. I didnโ€™t like travelling by car as Iโ€™d often feel car sick, but I coped with it by listening to music on my Walkman on the way there. Then, on the way back, came the highlight of the day (sorry, Nan, up in heaven, but it was!) โ€“ listening to the Top 40 on BBC Radio 1.

I remember being pretty miffed if we left Nanโ€™s late and I found Iโ€™d missed some of the show. But, equally, I was also put out if we arrived home before the all-important No.1 had been announced. It was clearly all about priorities (well, I was a teenager!).

Now, I absolutely loved Madonna and her Papa Donโ€™t Preach was number one in the summer of that year โ€“ 1986. Sheโ€™d had three weeks at number one and I recall being so excited at the thought of tuning in to see if sheโ€™d made it to the top for a fourth week in a row.

And had she? No, she hadnโ€™t. I wasnโ€™t best pleased. To make matters worse, sheโ€™d been pushed out of her spot by Chris De Burgh and a song I absolutely hated โ€“ Lady in Red.

Mum and Dad really didnโ€™t help either when I asked them to switch the car radio off.

โ€œI like this song,โ€ Dad said, turning it up.

I was outraged and huffed and puffed, folding my arms in protest. Iโ€™m sure I saw a glint in Dadโ€™s eye as he turned round to look at me, sat in the back, a scowl plastered across my face, as he cranked the volume up all the more.

I must have been traumatised by this whole chain of events as I canโ€™t bear to listen to the song even to this day!

  5. That is a funny story! My dad would have done the same. I’ve seen Chris De Burgh perform and he was very good. He has better songs though and this one was overplayed.

  6. I’d bought a red dress with a fitted bodice for a darts presentation evening the year this came out.
Ex partner wasn’t impressed (but then he never was) but I was pleased as I thought it was flattering. The other male members of the darts team liked it though, and I was dancing most of the night, either with them, or the girls! I should add it was the year my team won the league and got a trophy, and his……… didn’t.

      1. As it turned out, the ladies team won the Summer and Winter leagues four years on the trot and were runner’s up the first summer I played for them. His men’s team won twice, so I had a few more trophies than he did. That didn’t bode well either!!!
