Story Chat II

I’m delighted to be part of the wonderful Story Chat II blog tour. The fantastic Marsha Ingrao started Story Chat ‘as a unique online blogging program for authors and readers’. After the success of the first book, she began work on the second, inviting authors from all over the world to send in their writing. She describes the second book as including ‘a diverse set of original short stories’.

Story Chat II is packed full of fascinating pieces of writing. It’s bookended by some useful non-fiction writing tips, which are helpful for any writer. Sandwiched in between are some brilliant stories. Nowhere else have I read such a wide range of writing, from pieces to make you laugh, then cry, twists you don’t see coming, stories aimed at younger readers, coming of age tales, sci-fi and much more. There really is something for everyone.

A particular favourite of mine was Gary A Wilson’s Anxious About Seahorses. I felt for the character, Charlotte, who has autism and has been sent for a unique type of therapy. I don’t want to give anything away, but I loved the way the story unfolded and how we connect with the characters.

Yvette Prior deals with grief so touchingly in her story Uncle Ted’s Assets. It can be a difficult subject to write about, but Yvette deals with it well, in an informed and thought-provoking way.

I do like a surprise ending and Diana Peach weaves her magic in her entertaining story, The Grand Adventure.

And, of course, I must mention the delightful read from Robbie Cheadle, Sir Stealthy and the Jewellery thieves, together with illustrations.

There are many other stories worthy of a mention, including ones from Hugh Roberts, Geoff Le Pard, Cathy Cade and Marsha herself. But each and every story has someone special and something different about it. I thoroughly recommend reading the book. I devoured it from cover to cover in only a couple of sittings.

      2. Thanks so much, Darlene. The feedback is interesting and so different. Sometimes it takes us up and down rabbit holes, and sometimes it is more constructive. Most of the time it is a little of both, but always kind.

      4. I agree, Esther, I am so proud of it and of all the authors that contributed. Your review pointed out the diversity of stories and now of genres as well. I think those things make it a valuable book for people’s collections. I looked the other day and it is also available in hardback.

  8. Hi Esther. This was a great post and I like how you say that you devoured the book. I soaked it up too and even though I knew most of the stories, I found that having it al together in a book made it fun to read them again, and of course I noticed things I missed the first time. Oh, and I appreciate your note about my story. The topic of death truly is not a fun topic and I am glad I was able to do it okay in Uncle Ted’s Assets to contribute to Story Chat Vol 2.

Hope you have a great day

and after the story chat feedback, I would have made a few changes – but glad to leave it as is.

    2. Death is not a popular subject, yet it is. We all think about it and are, in ways fascinated by it. There are so many facets and things we can write about death, and the direction you went is not a common subject or POV. Thanks for stopping by Esther’s tour post, and thanks for yours today. 🙂 xxx

      1. Marsha, you really captured the bit of paradox here… “Death is not a popular subject, yet it is…”

  14. Hi Esther,

I apologize for being so late to thank you for your public mention and kind words for my story, Anxious About Seahorses.  I saw your remarks very soon after you posted them, but work interrupted me that day and I struggled to get back to everyone – and unfortunately until now didn’t find my way back to you. Marsha was kind enough to help me with a link that brought me here.

The version you read was a strong rewrite of an earlier pre-Story-chat version that I’d wanted to improve. Last year (24) was crazy for me and my family and I got very little writing done but I’m hoping now that I’ve retired that there will be more stories created with my name on them. I hope to do at least as well as  Anxious About Seahorses proved to be.

Thank you so much for reading and so kindly commenting on my work.
