Make your characters real
It’s often the attention to the little details that brings a character to life – their mannerisms, the way they say things, what they say, how they look etc. Imagine your character in your mind; even write down some characteristics and what they look like. This will help you to make them come to life on the page.

After two books with pretty flat characters, I finally gave myself over to the 100 questions method, setting down a series of questions to answer about each of my main characters. Obvious stuff like looks, age, occupation, down to weird things like do they eat shell fish and do they pick their nose! You don’t use half of what you learn about them, but you do get to know them well and hopefully that comes through in the writing.
What a fantabulous post this has been. Never observed this sort of helpful post.
