The A-Z Of Writing Ideas – F Is For…

Welcome to the sixth instalment in my latest writing series. Each week, I give you an idea – whether it’s a magazine to write for, a theme for a short story, the opening line of a poem…Here are the first , second , third , fourth and fifth in the series.

This week, it’s  the letter F‘s turn. And F is for Festival.

Think festival and what do you come up with? Music? Beer? Food? Arts and crafts? There are all sorts of festivals out there and I’m sure you’ve attended one or two. Why not write about one for a local magazine, or publication specialising in that particular festival?

It’s not only non-fiction that you can apply the idea of a festival to. Start thinking about what could happen at a festival and all sorts of story ideas will start to whirl around in your mind. How about the discovery of a dead body at a beer festival? Is it murder? An unfortunate accident? Suicide? Here’s another story prompt for you – a child goes missing at an arts and crafts festival. It could be the child of an important local dignitary. Is it a kidnap? Or has the child wandered off? Another idea is for a story centred around a romance between a couple meeting for the first time at a music festival. Perhaps they think it’s just a one night stand and so they don’t exchange phone numbers, but they can’t stop thinking about each other afterwards…

  1. You’ve got me thinking (again!) Esther … one of my ‘His & Hers’ stories starting as you described … the physical first and the emotional later? Eric.

  3. Lots of inspiration here. Summers at Brecon Jazz Festival, camp-stove cooking, grease-pits, silly Guide antics, etc.
